Pharmacy Technician

Summary:

Prepares technical and clerical tasks associated with the preparation, labeling and dispensing of pharmaceuticals. Plays an integral role in the inventory and quality assurance activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and schedules with the assistance of the Pharmacist in the preparation of sterile admixtures and home medical equipment orders
  • Completes all calculations on product preparation and obtains validation from the Pharmacist before compounding/mixing
  • Compounds sterile admixtures and non-admixtures, including but not limited to parenteral nutrition, antibiotics, chemotherapy, hydration, narcotic analgesics, using aseptic technique where state laws permit
  • Prepares labels, prescription, compounding/mixing worksheets and completes and maintains product lot numbers and expirations dates and batch records. Generates delivery/pick slips under the supervision of the Pharmacist. Picks and pulls supplies and home medical equipment
  • Ensures compounding/clean room areas and related equipment are cleaned and sanitized and maintained in compliance with company policies and procedures
  • Obtains supply inventories from patients/clients and communicates information obtained from patients/clients to the Pharmacist as required
  • Participates in branch management, department and intra-departmental meetings and quality improvement activities as requested. Adheres to all Accreditation, OSHA, FDA, state, local and federal regulations and standards relevant to infusion pharmacy and home medical equipment
  • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as required

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • At least one year experience of aseptic preparation of infusion related pharmaceuticals in a hospital or home infusion setting
  • General knowledge of drug terminology, pharmaceutical calculations, drug use and aseptic techniques
  • Ability to work independently, accurately and efficiently
  • Demonstrate basic pharmacy knowledge of reading and interpreting prescriptions

Education/Licenses/Certificates required:

  • Successful completion of an approved/accredited pharmacy technician training program
  • 1-3 years related pharmacy experience in a home care setting
  • IV certified preferred
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Effective mathematical and communication skills required

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

  • Minimal travel for patient deliveries may be required
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk and use hands to finger, handle or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. The employees must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
